Box Dimensions: Record Length, Width and Height Without Ambiguity

01What do length, width and height mean on a box?

For a rectangular box, length and width describe the base or opening plane, while height runs from base to top. Packaging references commonly record dimensions in an L x W x H sequence, but people may rotate a box or use “depth” differently. The safest brief does not rely on the labels alone.

Place the box or product in its intended packing position. Mark one edge L, the crossing edge W, and the vertical edge H on a photo or simple drawing. Write the values beside those arrows. If an opening direction matters, show the lid, tuck flap, handle or front panel too.

02Should you measure the product or the box?

Measure both when both exist, but do not mix them in one line.

For a new box, product measurements are the starting evidence, not automatically the final internal size. Clearance may be needed for insertion, removal, wrapping, dividers or protective components. Board and construction also affect the relationship between inside and outside measurements.

• Product dimensions — maximum occupied space in the intended packing position; label as: Product: L x W x H, mm.
• Internal box dimensions — usable space inside an existing box; label as: Inside box: L x W x H, mm.
• External box dimensions — finished outside size of an existing box; label as: Outside box: L x W x H, mm.

03How do you measure an irregular product?

Measure the maximum occupied length, width and height, not only the neat central body. Include the cap, pump, lid, handle, folded cable, sealed pouch edge or other part that must fit.

If the product can be packed in more than one orientation, photograph the preferred one. Add its weight, whether it is fragile, and whether movement inside the box is acceptable. Do not subtract a guessed clearance from the product or add a universal allowance; describe the packing result and ask for the construction to be confirmed.

A rigid ruler or straight edges can help locate the furthest points. For curved or tapered products, a paper mock-up or sample is more useful than a single front-view photo.

04Worked example: the same numbers, two different briefs

A message that says 120 x 75 x 42 could describe a product, inside space or outside box. It could also be millimetres or centimetres.

A checkable version is: Product size in packing position: L 120 x W 75 x H 42 mm. The cap is included in the 120 mm length. Product weight: 180 g. It lies flat with the label facing upward. Photo with L/W/H arrows and front-panel direction attached. We need a printed folding box; please confirm the suitable internal and external dimensions, construction, board, artwork/dieline scope, quantity options and sample requirement in the quotation.

05What else should accompany the dimensions?

Send a straight-on product photo, a side photo, the marked measurement photo and any existing box sample. State the quantity, number of artwork versions, intended display and packing method. Attach the logo, required text and any artwork or dieline already available.

If you are measuring an existing box, say whether you want to reproduce its outside size, match its usable inside space or only use it as a visual reference. Photograph the opening, locking tabs, inserts and glued or folded areas that affect use.

06Copy-and-send box measurement brief

Use labelled dimensions and ask the quotation to confirm the final construction rather than relying on three unlabelled numbers.

• Product name or type.
• Product dimensions in packing position: L ___ x W ___ x H ___ mm/cm.
• Product weight and any cap, handle, pump, cable or other protrusion included.
• Preferred orientation and opening direction.
• Existing box: none, sample available, inside size or outside size.
• Product photos and marked L/W/H image attached: yes or no.
• Quantity, number of designs and artwork status.
• Intended use, required date and postcode for confirmation.
• Ask for final dimensions, construction, board, insert, dieline/artwork, sample, price, schedule and exclusions to be confirmed.
